Agartala, October 02, 2025: In a major security breach, six undertrial prisoners staged a violent escape from Dharmanagar Sub-Jail at Kalikapur in North Tripura district on Wednesday morning.

According to initial reports, the incident took place around 6 a.m., soon after the inmates were let out of their cells for routine morning work and breakfast. Armed with improvised weapons, the prisoners allegedly attacked jail staff and managed to scale the right-side wall of the compound to flee, bypassing the heavily guarded main gate.

During the scuffle, jail official Bedu Mia sustained serious injuries and was rushed to Dharmanagar District Hospital, where he is currently undergoing treatment.

Authorities confirmed that one of the escapees, identified as Abdul Pata of Nilambazar in Assam—facing charges under the NDPS Act—was re-arrested shortly after the jailbreak. The remaining fugitives are still at large.

They include: Nazim Uddin, accused in multiple theft and property-related cases; Rahim Ali, facing charges under Sections 331 and 309 of the BNS; Sunil Debbarma, accused in a murder case under IPC Sections 364, 302, and 201; Narayan Dutta, a Bangladeshi national charged under Section 3 of the PP Act; and Rosan Ali, also facing charges under Sections 331 and 309 of the BNS.

A senior official said, “A massive manhunt has been launched across the district, extending to the Assam-Tripura border and areas near the international boundary with Bangladesh. Security has been intensified at transport hubs, highways, and other sensitive points.

Authorities are on high alert as the search operation continues.

Meanwhile, following the escape of six undertrial prisoners from Dharmanagar Sub-Jail, the Inspector General of Prisons, Tripura, has suspended Jailor Dhananjoy Bhattacharya and Warder Pallab Kanti Bhowmik with immediate effect.

According to the official orders, disciplinary proceedings have been initiated against both officers. During their suspension, Bhattacharya has been attached to Kamalpur Sub-Jail (Dhalai), while Bhowmik has been attached to Kailashahar District Jail (Unakoti). They are barred from leaving headquarters without prior approval from the competent authority.
