Agartala, February 03, 2026: A sudden rise in cases of street dogs disappearing from several localities in Agartala has sparked concern among animal welfare groups, who suspect illegal pickups being carried out under the guise of sterilisation drives.
Over the past few days, multiple incidents have been reported, prompting NGOs to caution residents against impostors posing as animal welfare workers.
Wrighbed Dutta of Pawsome NGO confirmed receiving at least four complaints from dog lovers alleging that unidentified individuals were capturing dogs using jute bags. When confronted, the men reportedly claimed to be working for sterilisation programmes.
Dutta categorically denied any involvement, stressing that no genuine NGO uses jute bags to handle dogs. He warned that such practices are unsafe, inhumane, and raise suspicion of illegal relocation by dog haters misusing the banner of animal welfare.
In response, Pawsome NGO has decided to lodge a formal complaint with police and has deployed volunteers for late-night patrolling in vulnerable areas to prevent further disappearances.
Echoing similar concerns, K Nine NGO issued a public alert via Facebook, alleging a disturbing rise in dog smuggling after a recent Supreme Court ruling on street dogs. The group clarified that its rescue operations are limited to sick or injured animals and warned that illegal pickups are eroding public trust in genuine welfare organisations.
Local resident Dibyendu Chakma reported several dogs missing from his area, particularly in the early morning hours. He urged citizens to remain cautious and spread awareness.
Animal welfare groups across Agartala are now pressing for coordinated efforts by citizens, police, and the administration to investigate the incidents, safeguard street dogs, and protect the credibility of legitimate rescue organisations.
