In a shocking incident on Friday afternoon, several officials, including teachers on deputation and a data entry operator, were caught consuming liquor inside the election section of the Udaipur Sub-Divisional Magistrate’s (SDM) office in Gomati district, Tripura. The discovery was made after local journalists, acting on a tip-off, entered the office and found the officials indulging in an unauthorized break.
Upon realizing they had been spotted, the officials quickly panicked, but the situation was already exposed. SDM Tridip Sarkar, who was not present in the office at the time, immediately ordered an inquiry into the matter.
SDM Sarkar confirmed to reporters that notices had been issued to the involved officials, and disciplinary action would follow as per government rules. “I was in the field but directed the additional SDM to investigate. A detailed report has been submitted, and strict action will be taken against those involved. Such behavior is unacceptable in government offices,” he stated.
The SDM clarified that the officials caught drinking were not permanent staff, but were instead on deputation. The matter will be reported to their respective departments, including the Education Department, as some of the officials involved were teachers.
Block Level Officer (BLO) Lakhan Sarkar, one of those caught drinking, admitted to the actions. The incident has raised concerns over the conduct of officials during the ongoing election process.
