Tripura to Establish First Government Women’s University and Technical University: Minister Sushanta Chowdhury

Agartala, November 19, 2025: In a landmark decision, the Tripura government has approved the upgradation of Agartala Women’s College into the state’s first Government Women’s University. Similarly, the Tripura Institute of Technology (TIT) will be elevated to the status of Tripura Technical University.

The announcement was made following a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister at the state secretariat on Tuesday. Tripura’s Cabinet Spokesperson and Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury briefed the media personnel at Civil Secretariat in Agartala city on Wednesday, outlining the series of decisions taken by the cabinet.

The key cabinet decisions include: Agartala Women’s College will be upgraded into Tripura’s first Government Women’s University, while the Tripura Institute of Technology will be elevated to Tripura Technical University.

In terms of recruitment, the cabinet approved the filling of 97 new posts in the Cooperative Department through JRBT. Additionally, 28 ICDS Supervisors will be appointed in the Social Welfare and Social Education Department via TBSC examination. The Urban Department will see the creation of 14 new technical posts. Across the state, 119 new Anganwadi centres will be opened, with equal numbers of workers and helpers recruited to staff them. The Tripura Film and Television Institute under the Information Department will also appoint eight new faculty members.

On policy matters, the cabinet introduced minor amendments to the rules governing retirement benefits for journalists.

The decision to establish Tripura’s first Women’s University and a Government Technical University has been widely welcomed. Social media platforms have seen a wave of congratulatory messages, with many hailing it as a progressive step for higher education in the state.

Minister Sushanta Chowdhury confirmed that the Women’s University will be set up within the premises of Agartala Women’s College, marking a historic milestone in Tripura’s educational landscape.
