Agartala, August 29, 2025: Tripura Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha on Friday announced that the state government is exploring the use of water from Bangladesh’s Titas River to provide clean, iron-free drinking water to all 51 wards of Agartala Municipal Corporation.
The Chief Minister made the announcement while inaugurating the Vivekananda Township Project at Kaman Chowmuhani, where he stressed the government’s commitment to sustainable urban development and modern infrastructure.
“We are dedicated to development, and our initiatives speak for themselves. From January to August alone, we have inaugurated and laid the foundation for projects worth Rs 800 crore. This is the vision of a BJP-led government—progress and transparency,” Dr. Saha said.
He credited the Tripura Urban Development Authority (TUDA) for spearheading housing projects for economically weaker and middle-class families. At present, 216 flats worth Rs 96 crore are under construction near Bhagat Singh Youth Hostel, with completion expected by March next year. The Chief Minister also noted that permissions for high-rise buildings are being given under strict regulatory norms.
On addressing financial challenges, Dr. Saha informed that he has urged the Centre to remove the cap on loan amounts for externally aided projects, arguing that similar restrictions are not placed on other states.
Outlining urban planning measures, he said GIS-based master plans are being prepared for 20 urban areas, with Agartala’s plan already 70 percent complete. Under the Mukhyamantri Nagar Unnayan Prakalpa, supported by the Asian Development Bank, development projects worth Rs 530 crore are underway in the first phase.
Highlighting the proposal on Titas River water, Dr. Saha said, “The waters of Haora, Kalapania, and Katakhal canals mix with the Titas River. I have proposed supplying water from the Titas River to all 51 wards of Agartala to provide iron-free drinking water. The proposals are ready, and once approved, we will place them before the Centre for support.”
