Agartala, August 27, 2025: The state government is gearing up to introduce super-specialty and MDS courses in Tripura very soon, with a special focus on strengthening healthcare infrastructure. Chief Minister and Health Minister Professor Dr. Manik Saha announced this while distributing appointment letters to newly recruited medical officers at Rabindra Bhavan, Agartala on Tuesday.

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Saha said, “There has always been a demand for specialist doctors in Tripura. Although we started the recruitment process of more than 170 specialist doctors through TPSC, we could appoint only 45 candidates. The recruitment process will continue to fill the vacancies.”

He congratulated the newly appointed doctors and reminded them of their responsibility, stating, “Doctors are meant to serve people with dedication, even though at times they become easy targets of criticism.”

Highlighting the government’s initiatives, the Chief Minister informed that Tripura now has 400 MBBS seats and 89 postgraduate seats. “We are in talks with the National Medical Commission to begin super-specialty courses. We have also received approval for about 100 more seats in government medical colleges. Alongside MBBS and PG, BDS courses have been introduced, and MDS courses will soon begin. We are also expanding B.Sc. Nursing with 50 seats to address the shortage of nursing staff,” he said.

Dr. Saha urged the newly appointed doctors to treat patients with empathy and punctuality. “We are working to build more institutions and reduce the number of referrals outside the state,” he added.

Health Department Secretary Kiran Gitte, Additional Health Secretary Rajiv Datta, Director of Health Services Dr. Tapan Majumdar, NHM Mission Director Saju Vaheed A and other senior officials attended the programme. On this occasion, the Chief Minister formally handed over appointment letters to 45 specialist doctors under the Health Department’s initiative.
