Agartala, June 24, 2025: In a major step toward improving road safety and emergency care, Tripura Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury on Monday announced the upcoming launch of the ‘Cashless Medical Scheme for Road Accident Victims 2025’. The scheme aims to provide immediate medical treatment to accident victims during the critical golden hour without cost barriers.

Speaking at the 16th meeting of the State Road Safety Council at the State Secretariat, the Minister said the initiative is part of the government’s broader commitment to safeguarding lives. “The objective is to ensure that accident victims receive timely treatment at the nearest hospital without financial concerns,” he stated.

The meeting also included a preliminary discussion on the scheme’s implementation, spearheaded by the Transport Department. Chowdhury further emphasised the importance of public awareness in reducing road accidents and fatalities. “Civic alertness and education are key to prevention,” he said, adding that multiple safety initiatives are underway in the state.

These include the deployment of Interceptor Vehicles equipped with life support systems, intensified public awareness campaigns, the Hit and Run Compensation Scheme, and the Good Samaritan Scheme to encourage timely assistance from bystanders.

Highlighting progress in the sector, the Minister noted that Tripura recorded a 13% decline in road accident cases over the past year, attributing the improvement to a combination of administrative action and public cooperation.

Additional Secretary of the Transport Department, Subrata Chowdhury, presented a visual report outlining the proposed scheme and elaborated on ongoing safety initiatives. He said the scheme aligns with central government efforts to reduce road accident fatalities across the country.

The meeting was attended by officials from the police, traffic, and other allied departments, who unanimously stressed the need for collaborative efforts to build a safer road environment across Tripura.
