Agartala, November 25, 2025: In a bid to improve public transport and ease commuting for citizens across Tripura, the state government has announced plans to procure 20 new buses under the Tripura Road Transport Corporation (TRTC).

Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury chaired a high-level meeting at the Secretariat here in Agartala city on Monday to review pressing issues related to the Transport Department and TRTC. The meeting was attended by TRTC Vice-Chairman Samar Roy, the Transport Secretary, Transport Commissioner, Additional Secretary of the Finance Department, TRTC Managing Director, and other board members.

Officials discussed strategies to strengthen the functioning of the corporation and expand services to meet growing demand. Following deliberations, several key decisions were taken, including the procurement of additional buses to enhance connectivity across the state.

Speaking to Northeast Today, TRTC Vice-Chairman Samar Roy confirmed that the department, under the guidance of Minister Chowdhury, is preparing to purchase 20 new buses. “The Transport Department is planning to introduce these buses on various routes to provide greater convenience to the common people,” Roy said.

Currently, TRTC operates around 25 buses across different routes in Tripura. The corporation employs 104 regular staff members along with 11 daily-rated workers (DRWs). Officials noted that the addition of new buses will significantly expand the fleet, improve service reliability, and reduce congestion for daily commuters.

The move comes as part of the government’s broader effort to modernize public transport infrastructure and ensure affordable mobility for residents. With the new procurement, TRTC aims to strengthen its role as a lifeline for passengers in both urban and rural areas, offering safer and more efficient travel options.

The initiative is expected to be rolled out in the coming months, marking a step forward in Tripura’s transport development agenda.
