Agartala, April 06, 2026: Tripura Tribal Welfare Minister Bikash Debbarma narrowly escaped injury after allegedly coming under attack during a visit to Mungiakami area on Sunday night, triggering tension in the locality ahead of the upcoming elections.
It is reported that the Minister had visited the residence of Renu Debbarma, situated near Mungiakami Higher Secondary School, as part of scheduled party-related interactions and courtesy meetings. Soon after news of his arrival spread, a group of miscreants allegedly gathered near the house and launched an attack.
Sources claimed that the attackers, allegedly led by Elen Debbarma, hurled bricks and stones at the house and attempted to target the Minister with a slingshot projectile. The sudden violence created panic in the area, with the tin roof and structural portions of the house reportedly sustaining major damage.
Several rooms of the residence were allegedly vandalised, while around eight to ten motorcycles parked nearby were damaged during the attack. A vehicle accompanying the Minister was also reportedly targeted by the assailants.
As the situation escalated, the Minister and his Personal Security Officers took shelter inside the house and remained there for nearly an hour until security forces arrived.
Speaking after the incident, Debbarma alleged that the attack was aimed specifically at him and described it as an attempt to create fear ahead of the elections. He said such violent political activities were unacceptable in a democratic system where every political party has the right to function.
Police from Tripura Police along with paramilitary personnel reached the spot after receiving information and brought the situation under control. The Minister and his associates were later escorted to safety.
The incident took place around 8 pm. No physical injuries were reported, but security has been intensified in the area as police launched an investigation to identify those involved.
