Agartala, September 06, 2025: Tension prevailed at Santirbazar railway station on Friday night after locals detained two Nigerian nationals on suspicion.
It is reported that an auto driver from Bilonia had arrived at the station to take the two Nigerians to Bilonia. This raised suspicion among local drivers and residents, who subsequently intercepted and detained the duo.
On receiving the information, Officer-in-Charge of Santirbazar police station Raju Datta along with SI Samir Biswas rushed to the spot and rescued the two men from the agitated crowd. They were then brought to the police station for verification.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that both Nigerians were carrying valid passports and visas,” said a police official. However, police have launched further inquiry to verify the authenticity of their travel documents.
The auto driver from Belonia, who accompanied them, has also been detained for questioning. Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Bappi Debbarma told the media, “The two Nigerians were brought to the police station for verification. Since Santirbazar railway station does not have a Government Railway Police (GRP) presence, the station often becomes a hotspot for illegal activities.”
Police confirmed that questioning is underway to ascertain the purpose of the foreigners’ visit and their travel route.
