Agartala, December 6, 2025: A woman from Tripura’s East Kaulikura village under Kailashahar’s Gournagar block in Unakoti district died by suicide after allegedly being unable to repay mounting microfinance loans, police confirmed on Saturday.

Pratibha Sinha, officer at Kailashahar Women’s Police Station, stated that the victim, identified as Anjana Malakar, had borrowed from multiple microfinance institutions but failed to manage repayments. “She had taken loans from different agencies and could not rotate the debt further. Under pressure, she ended her life,” Sinha said.

Anjana Malakar, a resident of Ward No. 3 of Kaulikura Gram Panchayat, lived with her husband Parimal Malakar. Both were daily wage laborers struggling with poverty. Villagers reported that due to lack of regular work in the area, Anjana had borrowed from at least three microfinance companies, including Bandhan and Bharat. While she managed to pay installments occasionally when work was available, long periods of unemployment left her unable to meet repayment schedules.

According to locals, recovery agents from the microfinance firms frequently visited her home, pressing for dues. On December 5, Anjana went missing from her residence around 4 p.m. Her husband searched among relatives and neighbors but failed to trace her.

The following morning, villagers discovered her body hanging from a tree in a nearby forest. Police were immediately informed, and officers from Kailashahar Women’s Police Station recovered the body. It was later sent to Unakoti District Hospital for post-mortem examination.

The incident has cast a pall of grief over East Kaulikura, highlighting the growing distress among rural households caught in cycles of debt and joblessness.
