Tripura Youth Arrested with Brown Sugar Worth ₹5.5 Lakh in Dharmanagar

Agartala, June 21, 2025: Acting on a tip-off, Dharmanagar police on Saturday arrested a 23-year-old youth in possession of brown sugar worth approximately ₹5.5 lakh in the black market.

The arrest was made around 11 AM near the Dharmanagar railway station, under Ward No. 22 of Dharmanagar Municipal Council. The operation was led by SDPO B. Zorinpuya and Officer-in-Charge of Dharmanagar Police Station Smriti Kanta Bardhan.

“We received credible information that brown sugar was being sold in the vicinity of the railway station. Acting swiftly, we conducted a search and apprehended the accused,” said OC Bardhan.

The arrested youth has been identified as Salman Hossain (23), son of Gunu Mia, a resident of Ward No. 2 under Bhagyapur Gram Panchayat in the Dharmanagar Police Station area.

In the presence of Sub-Divisional Magistrate and other officials, police recovered a backpack from the accused containing 55 grams of heroin concealed in five soap boxes.

“The estimated market value of the seized heroin is around ₹5.5 lakh. A case has been registered against him under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act,” confirmed SDPO B. Zorinpuya.

Police said that Hossain is currently under interrogation and will be produced before the district court tomorrow, where authorities are expected to seek police remand for further investigation.
