Agartala, June 10, 2025: A delegation of the Tripura Youth Congress on Tuesday submitted a formal complaint to the Tripura Human Rights Commission (THRC), urging immediate intervention and protection for party leader Shahjahan Islam, his family and other minority residents of Masjid Patti in Santipara, Agartala.
Meeting with THRC Chairman Justice Arindam Lodh, the delegation alleged a violent attack and continued threats against Shahjahan Islam and his family members. The incident reportedly took place on the night of June 8, after Shahjahan appeared in a Facebook Live video in which he made remarks critical of Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, the state police, and certain BJP minority leaders over an incident related to cow slaughter.
According to the complaint, a group of miscreants allegedly linked to the ruling BJP vandalized Shahjahan’s residence, damaged furniture, and misbehaved with female family members. The Youth Congress expressed concern that instead of taking action against the attackers, police from East Agartala Police Station arrested Shahjahan’s elderly father and brother—both of whom, they claimed, were uninvolved in the matter. The two have been sent to 14-day judicial custody.
Calling the situation a serious violation of human rights, the Youth Congress urged the THRC to investigate the matter impartially and ensure protection for the victims and other vulnerable families in the locality.
