Agartala, August 22, 2025: A massive financial scam has come to light at Tripura’s Baghaicharri branch post office under Kamalpur sub-division in Dhalai district, where the Postal Assistant in charge identified as Jevi Debbarma allegedly embezzled deposits worth nearly ₹50 lakh from small savings accounts.

The fraud was exposed after panic-stricken depositors, mostly from economically weaker sections, lodged a written complaint through the Sub-Post Master of Kamalpur to the Divisional Inspector of Teliamura postal division. They alleged that Debbarma accepted cash deposits but never updated their passbooks.

“Many of us trusted the post office with our hard-earned money, but when we checked, the amounts were missing,” said one aggrieved villager. Reports suggest that discrepancies surfaced when depositors noticed mismatches between their savings and maturity returns. Upon verification, it was revealed that large sums had never been deposited at all.

The scam is believed to have affected around 700 account holders, with the total misappropriation estimated at ₹50 lakh. News of the irregularities spread quickly in the locality, triggering anger among villagers. Sensing trouble, Debbarma reportedly fled the area, and his mobile phone remains switched off.

Confirming the complaints, Sub-Post Master Nakul Biswas said, “We have forwarded the grievances to the higher authorities for necessary action.” The victims also lodged a complaint at Kamalpur police station, demanding strict action against the accused.

“We’ve received information from approximately 700 account holders regarding a suspected misappropriation of ₹50 lakh at the Baghaicharri branch post office. If any of them submit a formal written complaint, we will promptly register a case and initiate a thorough investigation,” said Sanjay Laskar, Officer-in-Charge of Kamalpur police station while speaking to Northeast Today on Friday afternoon.

Police investigations are underway, while depositors remain anxious about the recovery of their savings.
