Agartala, August 21, 2025: Tragedy struck Chakmaghat on Thursday as five-year-old Krish Das, who had been fighting blood cancer, succumbed to the disease while undergoing treatment at a cancer hospital. His death has cast a shadow of grief over his family’s dilapidated hut.
Krish’s family had been living in extreme hardship. His father, Biswajit Das, is a fisherman with 100% hearing impairment, while his mother, Basanti Saha (Das), is 75% mentally disabled. Fishing in the Khowai River was their only source of income, leaving them unable to afford the costly treatment that ran into lakhs of rupees.
“When the doctors told us that Krish was suffering from blood cancer, our world collapsed,” a family member said in tears. Despite approaching various government offices, their appeals went unheard. Neighbors alleged that neither society nor self-proclaimed social workers came forward to support the family in their time of need.
Krish was admitted to a cancer hospital a few days ago, where Minister Bikash Debbarma had met him during a visit to interact with children. On hearing of his death, the minister, along with BJP Yuva Morcha workers including Mandal President Dhananjay Das, rushed to Chakmaghat to console the grieving parents.
Krish’s parents wept inconsolably beside his dead body, as neighbors gathered to share in their grief.
Expressing sorrow, Minister Bikash Debbarma said, “The Chief Minister Professor Dr. Manik Saha had taken all possible measures for the child’s treatment. Treatment had also started. But despite all efforts, death snatched him away. I am deeply saddened by his demise. I assure the family that I will stand by their side.”
