Agartala, November 07, 2025: In a remarkable advancement for Tripura’s healthcare sector, the Agartala Government Medical College and GBP Hospital achieved its fifth successful kidney transplant on November 4, 2025.
The milestone procedure was conducted under the sustained guidance and support of Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha, whose efforts have been pivotal in establishing kidney transplantation as a regular medical service in the state.
The recipient—a 32-year-old man from Kalyanpur in Khowai district—received a kidney donated by a well-wisher. Both donor and recipient are reported to be in stable condition and are being closely monitored by a team of specialists.
This marks the fifth consecutive successful transplant since Tripura’s first kidney transplant was performed on July 8, 2024. The latest operation was executed by a joint medical team comprising experts from GBP Hospital and Shija Hospitals.
The GBP Hospital team included urologists Dr. Bijit Lodh, Dr. Mukut Debnath, and Dr. Jiban Debnath, and nephrologists Dr. Manas Gop, Dr. Samaresh Pal, Dr. Udayan Saha, and Dr. Reshmi Das. From Shija Hospitals, the team featured urologists Dr. Soumyarendra Paonam and Dr. Maharabam Mahale, and nephrologist Dr. Galiver Potsangbam.
Anesthesia support was provided by Dr. Bhaskar Majumdar, Dr. Chirashree Choudhury, and Dr. Tapan Debbarma of GBP Hospital, alongside Dr. Anand Nagom and Dr. Apollo Khundkpham from Shija Hospitals. Senior Nursing Officer Tapati Chakraborty supervised the entire transplant procedure.
Medical Superintendent Dr. Shankar Chakraborty stated that all transplant operations are conducted strictly in accordance with medical and ethical protocols, with authorization from the competent committee. He further emphasized that comprehensive compatibility testing between donor and recipient is mandatory before every surgery.
