Agartala, February 24, 2026: In a breakthrough for Tripura’s indigenous farmers, the traditional aromatic rice variety Kali Khasa has drawn the attention of national buyers, thanks to the support of the Tripura Rural Livelihood Mission (TRLM).
Farmers from Amarpur subdivision recently supplied one metric tonne of Kali Khasa directly to Sublime Gourmet Pvt. Ltd., a Delhi-based private company. The consignment was sourced from women cultivators in villages near the Kalajhari hills, marking a significant step in connecting local producers to wider markets.
The handover took place at the Amarpur RD Block office in the presence of Block Development Officer Utpal Das, who facilitated the initiative. Officials highlighted that the direct purchase model eliminates middlemen, ensuring farmers receive fair prices and improved income.
Kali Khasa, known for its distinctive aroma and cultural heritage, has long been cultivated by indigenous communities in Tripura. With growing demand for organic and specialty rice across India, the variety is now being positioned as a premium product.
Local authorities believe this development will not only strengthen rural livelihoods but also showcase Tripura’s agricultural diversity to national buyers. The TRLM initiative is expected to pave the way for larger-scale marketing and potential export opportunities in the future.
