Agartala, June 27, 2025: Opposition leader and CPIM politburo member Jitendra Chaudhury on Friday launched a sharp attack on the ruling BJP in Tripura, accusing it of turning the police force into a “puppet” to suppress dissent and intimidate opposition voices.

Speaking with reporters in Agartala city, Chaudhury warned both the state government and law enforcement of the “dangerous consequences” if such trends continue.

“The ruling party is taking the law into its own hands by making the police dance like puppets. The results will not be good,” Chaudhury said, alleging repeated incidents of political violence and harassment directed at opposition parties across the state.

Citing several recent incidents, he said, “On June 17, the CPIM office in Bishalgarh was attacked in front of the police. On June 21, the Congress meeting at Dataram Bazar in Udaipur was disrupted. On June 24, CPIM’s meeting in Takarjala was targeted. And on June 25, the official residence of Sudip Roy Barman was attacked—all in front of the police. Did the police just stand by and watch the joke? What kind of democracy is this?”

Chaudhury also condemned what he described as the “toxic and dangerous rhetoric” coming from the top leadership of the ruling party. “Some of them are saying 76 percent of opposition supporters are diseased and should be thrown into rivers or oceans. This kind of language has no place in a democracy,” he said.

He further questioned whether highlighting misconduct by ruling party leaders amounts to a crime. “Is Sudip Roy Barman guilty for pointing out that a BJP leader from Madhya Pradesh urinated inside Ambassa Town Hall? If not, then why the retaliation?”

Directly addressing the police, Chaudhury warned: “Enough is enough. The outcome of this will not be good. Opposition parties want justice and rights, not police bias. But if we are forced to suffer repeatedly due to inaction or complicity, then everyone will have to face the consequences.”

The CPIM leader called for immediate accountability and urged both the police and the ruling party to uphold democratic values and the rule of law.
