Agartala, November 04, 2025: The Tripura Power Department is set to introduce advanced technology to double the power generation capacity of the Rokhia gas-based power plant from 60 MW to 120 MW through a combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) system, backed by Rs 1,119.30 crore in funding from the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
Speaking exclusively to Northeast Today, Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath on Monday evening said, “The Bhoomi Pujan for the commissioning of the combined cycle gas turbine power plant at Rokhia will be held this month. The ADB has sanctioned Rs 1,119.30 crore for the project, which aims to enhance generation from 60 MW to 120 MW.”
He added that the tendering process has already been completed and a high-level team will visit the Rokhia plant tomorrow. Megha Engineering and Infrastructure Limited (MEIL) has been selected as the implementing agency.
Recalling the evolution of the Rokhia power project, Nath noted, “There were seven generating units in 2002, eight in 2006, and nine in 2013. When the BJP-led government assumed office, only three units were functional, producing 40 MW of power, a level maintained until the 2022–23 fiscal year. Later, generation dropped due to ONGC’s failure to supply gas.”
Highlighting the state’s shift toward renewable energy, the minister said that the depletion of underground gas reserves has prompted the government to prioritize solar and hydro-based power. “Tripura has been recognized as the top state in the country for successful implementation of the PM-KUSUM scheme. We are also moving ahead with hydroelectric projects and developing a Hydrogen Hub at Dumbur reservoir,” Nath added.
