Agartala, January 7, 2026: Three organizations working for the rehabilitation of surrendered militants AC, JARC and DRMC have accused the Tripura government of neglecting long-pending welfare commitments. At a press conference held Wednesday at the Agartala Press Club, leaders of the groups warned of intensified protests if their demands remain unaddressed.
The leaders recalled staging a blockade on the Assam-Agartala National Highway on December 22, 2025, to press for their grievances. They withdrew the agitation after the Jirania Sub-Divisional Magistrate assured them, on behalf of the Tribal Welfare Minister, that a meeting would be convened the following day.
However, when a five-member delegation arrived at the minister’s conference hall on December 23, they were told by the Tribal Welfare Director that Minister Bikash Debbarma had left for an urgent engagement in Chawmanu. The groups described this as a breach of trust.
“He is a minister, he gave us his word but did not keep it. We never expected such disregard,” the leaders said, adding that unless Debbarma meets them by January 26, 2026, they will launch a larger agitation.
Their demands include: release of the remaining ₹23 crore from a ₹45 crore rehabilitation package announced in 2007 by the Left Front government, restoration of fencing support under the Chief Minister’s Rubber Mission to ₹16,800 per year, instead of the reduced ₹6,000, and withdrawal of pending legal cases against surrendered militants.
With the deadline approaching, the organizations’ warning has heightened pressure on the state government to act swiftly and prevent further unrest.
