Agartala, September 3, 2025: Tripura has recorded a remarkable decline in its unemployment rate over the last six years, according to data from the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) of the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation.

Officials from the Employment and Manpower Planning Department said that the state, once grappling with double-digit unemployment, has now brought the figure consistently below the national average.

“In 2018-19, Tripura’s unemployment rate stood at 10 percent compared to the national average of 5.8 percent. But within a year, the state brought it down to 3.2 percent, which remained unchanged in 2020-21. The rate further dipped to 3 percent in 2021-22, declined sharply to 1.4 percent in 2022-23, and stood at 1.7 percent in 2023-24. The national average during this period was 3.2 percent,” an official noted.

Authorities credited this improvement to the state government’s sustained recruitment and employment generation efforts. “Since 2018, as many as 19,810 individuals have been appointed to government jobs through a transparent process. The Joint Recruitment Board of Tripura (JRBT) alone has facilitated the appointment of 4,417 candidates in Group-C and Group-D posts,” a senior government official said.

The official added that the Tripura Public Service Commission (TPSC) has been conducting examinations regularly for vacancies across departments, while the Teachers’ Recruitment Board has recently advertised 700 graduate teacher posts. Recruitment in several other departments is also in progress.

In addition to government employment, alternative opportunities have been created through job fairs and private sector linkages. Between 2018-19 and 2024-25, the state organized 102 job fairs under the National Career Service (NCS) Scheme, providing employment to 2,231 candidates in private firms. “As per the NCS portal, 7,010 youths with Class VIII qualification have registered, while candidates of all educational backgrounds are encouraged to register through district employment centers,” the official informed.

The steady decline in unemployment, officials said, is a reflection of the government’s dual focus on expanding public sector recruitment and facilitating private sector employment, signalling a positive trend in Tripura’s job market.
