Agartala, August 28, 2025: In what has been described as a “historic milestone” in Tripura’s development journey, the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL) has successfully completed the electrification of the state’s entire 271 km railway network.
The announcement was made by Tripura Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath on Tuesday while inaugurating the 132 kV transmission line and 132 kV feeder bay at the Agartala Railway Station Complex.
“Today is an important day in the history of Tripura. The entire 271 km long railway line of the state, from Churaibari to Sabroom, has now come under electrification,” Nath said, calling it a landmark achievement for the state.
Recalling the state’s rail journey, the minister noted, “The first train reached Dharmanagar in 1964. After a long wait, Agartala was connected to the railway in 2008 and finally, in 2019, the train service reached Sabroom, our border town.”
He credited the transformation of Tripura’s railway connectivity to the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “In the last seven years, there has been a massive transformation of the railways. The conversion from meter gauge to broad gauge and the completion of the Agartala-Akhaura international rail link in 2023 are shining proof of this,” Nath said.
At present, a total of 19 important trains operate from Tripura, including the Rajdhani Express, Tripurasundari Express, Jan Shatabdi, Garib Rath, Agartala-Silchar, Agartala-Guwahati, and Mumbai Special, among others. In addition, four DEMU trains run daily, carrying nearly 12,000 passengers.
Explaining the importance of electrification, Nath remarked, “Earlier coal engines were used, later diesel engines. But due to harmful environmental effects, emphasis is now on electric trains. Across India, 68,600 km of the total 69,500 km broad gauge network has already been electrified—more than 98.8 percent. Today, Tripura’s 271 km line has been added to this.”
He also hinted at the possibility of starting electric train services soon. “If the central government and NFR want, it is possible to begin electric train operations in Tripura right away,” he asserted.
Highlighting the state’s larger energy goals, Nath added, “No development is possible without electricity. That is why we have already taken steps to increase the use of solar energy. Charging stations are being set up at 45 places across the state.”
The event was attended by MLA and Chief Whip Kalyani Roy, MLA Mina Rani Sarkar, MLA Abhishek Debroy and senior officials of NFR, who termed the electrification a historic leap for Tripura’s connectivity and growth.
