Agartala, December 20, 2025: The Twipra Students’ Federation (TSF) and the Tripura Indigenous Students’ Society (TISS) on Tuesday announced a statewide agitation on January 8 to press for the introduction of the Roman script for the Kokborok language.
Addressing a press conference, leaders of both organisations asserted that the demand for adopting the Roman script is decades old and central to the cultural rights of the indigenous community. They alleged that despite repeated assurances, the government has not taken any substantive action on the issue.
The leaders said the recent state-wide march in support of the Roman script received an overwhelming response, prompting the organisations to escalate the movement. They warned that continued government inaction would compel them to launch an unbroken, intensified agitation.
According to the organisations, the Roman script is not merely a technical demand but an essential component of preserving cultural identity. They informed that on January 8, demonstrations, rallies, and mass mobilisation programmes will be organised across various districts to mount pressure on the government.
While reiterating their commitment to peaceful protest, TSF and TISS leaders made it clear that the agitation would be further intensified if the authorities fail to respond positively to their demands.
