Agartala, August 09, 2025: A Tripura State Rifles (TSR) jawan has been arrested for allegedly poisoning his one-year-old daughter simply because she was born a girl. The tragic incident took place in Tripura’s Tulashikhar under Khowai district late last night.

According to the mother of the deceased child, her husband, identified as Rathindra Debbarma of the TSR 10th Battalion currently posted at Khumulung ADC Headquarters, gave their daughter a cold drink laced with poison. “Her only fault was being born a girl,” the grieving mother alleged, breaking down in tears.

She further claimed that Rathindra had subjected her to “unspeakable physical and mental torture” over the years for not bearing a son. The family’s residence is in Behala Bari, Khowai.

The mother recounted that she was asleep when her husband took the child away. Later, she was informed that her daughter’s body was in the morgue of GB Hospital, Agartala. “I don’t know who took my baby to the hospital or which doctor declared her dead. I just ran like a madwoman when I heard the news,” she said.

Eyewitnesses at GB Hospital reported that locals recognized Rathindra on the premises and confronted him. Tension escalated quickly, forcing police to intervene and escort the accused away under tight security. “People were furious. We had to protect him from the crowd before taking him to the station,” said a police official.

Police have registered a case and launched an investigation into the incident. “The accused is in custody. We are awaiting the post-mortem report to determine the exact cause of death,” a senior officer confirmed.

The shocking case has sparked outrage in the community, with many condemning the killing of an “innocent flower-like child” in such a brutal manner.
