Agartala, March 02, 2026: In a major boost to healthcare services in Tripura, Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) and GBP Hospital have successfully carried out two kidney transplants on consecutive days, marking the sixth and seventh such procedures in the state.
The transplants were performed on March 30 and 31, 2026, under an initiative of the Chief Minister, with a team of specialists from AGMC, GBP Hospital, and Shija Hospital and Research Institute, Manipur. This is the first time that two kidney transplants have been conducted back-to-back in the state, as earlier procedures were carried out individually.
The sixth transplant took place on March 30, when a 36-year-old patient from Kalsi in South Tripura received a kidney from his 33-year-old childhood friend. The surgery lasted around six hours, beginning at 9 am and concluding at 3 pm.
The seventh transplant was performed on March 31 on a 33-year-old patient from Champaknagar, who received a kidney donated by his 59-year-old father. The procedure started at 8:30 am and was completed by 1:30 pm, taking approximately five hours.
According to hospital sources, both donors and recipients are stable and are currently under round-the-clock medical observation.
The medical team comprised specialists from the Nephrology and Urology departments of AGMC and GBP Hospital, along with anaesthetists and experts from Shija Hospital, Manipur. The entire process was supervised by senior nursing officials, supported by a dedicated team of nurses and technicians.
Officials stated that the achievement highlights the continuous efforts of the state government and medical fraternity to strengthen organ transplantation services in Tripura. Notably, the first kidney transplant in the state was conducted on July 8, 2024, while the fifth transplant was completed on November 4, 2025.
