Agartala, December 2, 2025: The District and Sessions Judge’s Court of North Tripura district has sentenced two men from Tripura’s Sepahijala district to 12 years of rigorous imprisonment for smuggling cannabis. The verdict was delivered on Monday by Judge Abu Saleh Badruzza Laskar.
The convicts are Sujan Mia (25), a resident of Sonamura in Sepahijala district and Imdadul Haque (28) from Sonapur village in the same district. Alongside the prison term, the court ordered each of them to pay a fine of ₹1.5 lakh. In default of payment, they will serve an additional six months in jail.
The incident dates back to November 11, 2022, when a truck bearing registration number TR-01-B-1747 from Tripura was intercepted at the Churaibari watch post under Bazarichara police station in Assam around 11:30 p.m. During the search, police recovered 69 packets of cannabis weighing a total of 404 kg from the vehicle’s hood.
Both the driver and co-driver were arrested on the spot, and a case was registered under sections 20(b)(ii)(C), 25, and 29 of the NDPS Act. The accused were subsequently remanded to judicial custody.
Government prosecutor Mukundlal Kairi informed the media that the charges against the accused were proven during trial, while the truck owner was acquitted due to lack of evidence. The court examined six witnesses before delivering its judgment.
