The United States Department of State has issued an updated travel advisory for India, urging American citizens to exercise increased caution due to heightened risks from terrorism, crime, and sexual violence. The advisory is labeled Level 2, indicating that travelers should be aware of potential dangers and take necessary precautions.

The advisory highlights specific regions in India that pose a higher risk to travelers. Manipur has been marked as a “Level 4: Do Not Travel” area due to the threat of violence and crime, with ongoing ethnic-based civil conflict resulting in reports of extensive violence and community displacement. Attacks against Indian government targets occur regularly in the state.

Northeastern states have been given a “Level 3: Reconsider Travel” advisory due to the presence of ethnic insurgent groups that occasionally commit acts of violence, including bombings of buses, trains, and markets. However, there have been no recent reports of violence in Assam, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Sikkim, or Tripura.

The advisory also notes that US government employees traveling in India require prior approval before visiting certain states, including Manipur, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh, as well as areas outside of capital cities in Assam, Mizoram, Nagaland, Meghalaya, and Tripura.
