Aizawl, Feb 25: Adding to the mounting political pressure from the Northeast, Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma has strongly condemned the racial abuse and intimidation of three women from Arunachal Pradesh in South Delhi’s Malviya Nagar. In a social media post, the Chief Minister termed the incident “unconstitutional and unacceptable,” calling for swift and firm legal action against those responsible to uphold the values of “dignity, equality, and unity.”
Lalduhoma’s statement aligns with the unified stance taken by other regional leaders, including Arunachal Pradesh CM Pema Khandu, Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma, and Sikkim CM Prem Singh Tamang. The incident, sparked by a minor dispute over AC installation dust, saw a local couple—Ruby Jain and Harsh Singh—allegedly hurling racial slurs like “momo” and gender-based insults at the women. The victims, aged between 19 and 23, recorded the confrontation, which quickly went viral and drew national attention to the persistent prejudice faced by the Northeast community in the capital.
The Delhi Police have since arrested both accused individuals and escalated the probe to an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) rank officer. Furthermore, following a review of the viral footage and witness statements, authorities have invoked the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, a move welcomed by regional leaders who insist that such cases should not be treated as routine neighborhood disputes.
