Agartala, August 01, 2025: Archbishop Leopoldo Girelli, Apostolic Nuncio to India and representative of the Vatican paid his maiden visit to the Diocese of Agartala over the weekend, engaging deeply with the local Catholic community in a spiritually vibrant two-day tour from July 26 to 27.

Although the visit was unofficial, it was marked by significant pastoral engagements, enthusiastic participation from the faithful, and expressions of solidarity from various Catholic institutions in the state. The envoy was received with a youth-led motorbike rally that escorted him from the airport to the Bishop’s House, symbolizing both joy and reverence.

A formal reception was held at Holy Cross School, where Archbishop Girelli addressed hostel students. He lauded the educational mission of the Church and the remarkable work of the Holy Cross Congregation in Tripura, urging students to embrace Christian values and lead by example in society.

The Nuncio later visited the Holy Cross Provincial House, where he met senior priests and commended their years of selfless service in pastoral and missionary fields. A heartfelt stop at Nirmala Sishu Bhavan, Mother Teresa’s Home, followed, where he spent time with the sick and marginalized and expressed deep appreciation for the Sisters’ dedication to Christian charity.

A special gathering at the Bishop’s House brought together priests, religious, and lay faithful. Bishop Lumen Monteiro, CSC, DD, formally welcomed the Nuncio, and Sr Marcellina Sangma, FMA, presented an overview of the diocese. Archbishop Girelli offered messages tailored to each group, emphasizing love-led ministry for clergy, vocational commitment for religious, and appreciation for lay contributions—particularly catechists.

On Sunday, the World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly, Archbishop Girelli led Mass at the Cathedral, calling for greater respect and care for the elderly within families and the Church.

The visit concluded at Don Bosco Parish, Nandan Nagar and a farewell lunch at Auxilium Convent. In his parting message, the Nuncio thanked the Diocese for its warmth and hospitality.

He was accompanied by his secretary, Fr Stephen Fernandes.
