Agartala, February 12, 2026: Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha on Thursday asserted that the matter relating to the Village Council (VC) elections remains sub judice before the Supreme Court and accused certain quarters of spreading confusion over the issue.

Speaking to journalists in Agartala, the Chief Minister, without naming former Tipra Motha supremo Pradyot Kishore Debbarman, said there has been no negligence or reluctance on the part of the state government regarding the conduct of the VC elections. He pointed out that the elections have not been held since 2016 and maintained that the reasons behind the delay are known to all concerned.

Dr. Saha alleged that attempts are being made to mislead the public by offering “unnecessary and incorrect explanations” about the status of the elections. He clarified that Tipra Motha had approached the Supreme Court over the matter and that the case is still pending.

According to the Chief Minister, a misleading narrative is being circulated suggesting that the Village Committee elections will be held simultaneously with the upcoming ADC elections. He stated that the Supreme Court has sought the government’s response on whether it would be feasible to conduct the Village Committee polls along with the ADC elections. However, he emphasized that no final decision has been taken by the apex court so far.

The Chief Minister’s remarks assume significance in the backdrop of a recent social media post by Pradyot Kishore Debbarman, who claimed that the Supreme Court had directed that the Village Committee elections be conducted together with the ADC polls.

Meanwhile, Dr. Saha also informed that a Hindi conference will be held in the state shortly. Union Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to visit Tripura to attend the programme.
