Agartala, November 29, 2025: Tension gripped the Tongbari area under Chandpur and Surendranagar moujas in Simna constituency of West district on Friday as residents staged a vehement protest against an eviction notice issued by the Revenue Department. The notice pertains to nearly 72.28 acres of government land on which 27 families have been living for almost a hundred years.

Authorities had scheduled land demarcation for the day, but instead, villagers assembled in large numbers to block the process, shouting slogans and vowing to protect their homes and farmlands. Many residents claimed their ancestors settled on the land generations ago and said some families even possess pattas. Over decades, they have developed fruit orchards and rubber plantations, which they say are central to their livelihood.

Rejecting the eviction order, villagers declared they would not relinquish their land, asserting: “We will give blood, but not our gardens.”

Speaking to the media, the protesting families outlined their concerns and demanded that the government withdraw or revise the eviction notice. They urged authorities to acknowledge their long-standing settlement and agricultural contributions instead of removing them.

The affected families have also approached local MLA Brishaketu Debbarma, seeking his intervention to prevent displacement and safeguard their rights.
