Agartala, June 30, 2025: In response to the alleged gang-rape of a law student in the Kasba area of Kolkata, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has constituted a four-member fact-finding team to investigate the incident. The team, formed on the directive of BJP National President J.P. Nadda, reached Kolkata on Monday afternoon but reportedly faced resistance from the West Bengal administration in accessing the incident site and meeting key officials.
The delegation includes Rajya Sabha MP and former Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb, former Union Minister Satyapal Singh, Union Minister Meenakshi Lekhi, and Rajya Sabha MP Manan Kumar Mishra. They were received at the Kolkata airport by BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul.
Briefing the media, Paul stated that the team was initially headed to a hotel in New Town before visiting Lalbazar, where they had sought an appointment with the Kolkata Police Commissioner. “An official request has also been sent to meet the Chief Secretary by 3 PM,” she said. The team later planned to visit the South Kolkata Law College, where the alleged incident took place, and hold a press conference between 4 and 4:30 PM.
However, the delegation claimed that they were denied permission to visit the college and meet top officials. “This is a clear violation of democratic norms,” said Biplab Deb. “The Chief Minister sends delegations to Hathras and Pahalgaon, but when the opposition comes to Bengal, they are stopped. Women are not safe here, not even law students.”
Meenakshi Lekhi echoed the concern, saying, “Such incidents are recurring under the leadership of a female Chief Minister. If the administration can’t meet us, what exactly are they doing?”
Satyapal Singh added, “We’ve come on Nadda ji’s instructions. We hope Mamata Didi’s government allows us to meet officials and visit the site.”
