The “Women for Trees” campaign, an AMRUT Mitra initiative under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Government of India, was officially launched for Manipur today in celebration of World Environment Day. The launch event was jointly organised by the Town Planning Department and the Manipur Urban Development Agency (MUDA) at Hao Ground Children Park, Ward No. 15, Imphal West.
Speaking at the event, R.K. Dinesh Singh, Principal Secretary of MAHUD, highlighted that the campaign aligns with the national initiative “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam,” launched by the Prime Minister in 2024. He announced that the campaign has now entered its second phase, running from June 5 to August 31, 2025, following the planting of over 100 crore trees in its first phase.
Singh lauded the efforts of Self-Help Group (SHG) members for their proactive participation in identifying plantation sites during the preparatory drive conducted in May. Addressing the importance of sustainability, he emphasized that all trees planted under the campaign will be geo-tagged and regularly monitored to ensure healthy growth.
The campaign will be carried out across four towns—Imphal, Nambol, Moirang, and Mayang Imphal—with a target of planting 240 saplings. Singh urged students, community organisations, and the general public to contribute actively towards creating a greener environment.
As part of the programme, a short video was released highlighting cleanliness initiatives taken up under the Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban), focusing on efforts to keep Imphal city clean.
Ngangom Uttam Singh, Director of IPR and MAHUD and Secretary of MUDA, also addressed the gathering. He appreciated the contributions of NGOs and community members under the “Swachhta Hi Seva” campaign and praised the residents of Sangaiprou Kabui village for independently maintaining cleanliness in their locality.
The event concluded with a ceremonial plantation of saplings by R.K. Dinesh Singh, Ngangom Uttam Singh, and Thokchom Bankimchandra Singh, Corporator of Ward No. 15. The trio also inspected the Hao Ground Children Park. Additionally, kits were distributed to SHG members in recognition of their ongoing contributions.
