Guwahati, Jun 28: The Assam Cabinet has approved amendments to the Assam Panchayat (Constitution) Rules, 1995 to ensure fair and equitable representation of Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs) in the offices of President and Vice President of Zilla Parishads (ZPs).

As per the amended provisions, the reservation of these posts will be carried out through a system of lottery and rotation. Zilla Parishads where the positions have already been reserved for SCs and STs under this system will be excluded from the new round of selection.

The government stated that this move will ensure equitable opportunities for all ZP constituencies with SC and ST populations. The lottery process will be conducted in a transparent and open manner in the presence of representatives from political parties, administrative officials, and other concerned stakeholders.
