Gaurav Gogoi, president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee, on Tuesday said that the state is facing a serious crisis, citing the deaths of 162 migrant workers from Assam across different parts of the country over the past six months.

According to Gogoi, the deaths occurred in factories, construction sites, mines and in unsafe living conditions. He stated that these incidents are not isolated but reflect broader systemic issues affecting workers from the state.

He also pointed to challenges within Assam, including weakening agricultural conditions, low wages and limited employment opportunities. He said these factors are compelling many young people to migrate and take up high-risk and insecure jobs outside the state.

Gogoi further stated that the state government has not acknowledged the scale of the issue or treated it as a priority. He alleged that the concerns of migrant workers have not received adequate attention.

The remarks come amid ongoing political discourse in the state regarding employment, migration and worker safety.
