The Government of Sikkim has introduced the ‘Shravan Kumar Award’, a new state-level honour aimed at recognising individuals who display exceptional devotion in caring for their parents, particularly the elderly or ailing.

Announced by the Chief Minister on August 15, 2023, the award underscores the state’s commitment to promoting traditional family values and encouraging younger generations to take responsibility for elderly care. The award will be conferred annually on Independence Day, starting this year.

Administered by the Rural Development Department, the award is named after Shravan Kumar, a revered figure in Indian mythology symbolising filial piety. One individual from each Gram Panchayat in Sikkim will be selected every year for the honour.

Awardees will receive a cash prize of ₹1 lakh from the state government. The initiative particularly targets youth from economically weaker sections, aiming to support families that exemplify strong parental care. Recipients will be chosen through a thorough verification process to ensure fairness and transparency.
