Manipur CM Reviews Installation Work For ‘Sagol Kangjei’ Effigy at Marjing; Instruct Engineers To Complete Work By November 2022

The Manipur Chief Minister – N. Biren Singh inspected the ongoing installation work for the 120-feet Sagol Kangjei effigy at Marjing.

Considered to be a major tourist attraction; this monument is believed to promote the significance of Manipur in the game of Polo.

It aims to uphold the great religious and mythological significance linked with the sport.

The Manipur CM also interacted with the concerned Engineer and contractor and instructed them to complete the work by 1st week of November this year.

This gigantic Polo statue located above the hill top of Ebudhou Marjing hills, a semi-god who started Sagol Kangjei (polo) will popularize Manipur – the birthplace of polo sport. Besides, implementing the project will enhance tourist footfall, thereby generating employment opportunities for the local populace.

In the 1850s, the British observed Manipuris play a sport using a pony and a hockey-like stick. Influenced by the game, Britishers later formed a polo club in Silchar.

It is believed that the Manipur King – Kanba invented the game in the 14th century BC. While, the first polo match was conducted in 33 AD by King Nongda.

Taking to Twitter, the Manipur CM wrote “Inspected the ongoing installation work for the Sagol Kangjei statue at Marjing. This 120-feet monument shall be a major tourist attraction and bear testimony to the fact that Manipur gifted the game of Polo to the world.”
