Fish farmers from Meghalaya on Wednesday came flocking to be part of the 6th edition of ‘State Aquafest 2022’ organized by the Meghalaya Fisheries Department at the premises of the State Central Library in Shillong.
The Secretary of the Fisheries Department – Sibhi Chakravarthy Sadhu, IAS, inaugurated the event. Initiated under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), this event aims to enhance fish production through the construction of new ponds.
It aims to generate awareness of the Recirculatory Aquaculture System and Biofloc Fish Farming and promote entrepreneurship in the fish farming sector, thereby showcasing the developments in the fishery sector.
Stalls were managed by government departments, Self Help Groups (SHGs), NGOs, farmers, and entrepreneurs who were displaying and selling fish and other products.
According to the Chairman of the Meghalaya Farmers (Empowerment) Commission – KN Kumar, the State Aqua Fest essentially serves as a marketplace where buyers and sellers come together. It also provides an opportunity to the government and farmers to interact and reaffirm their commitment to helping Meghalaya become self-sufficient.
Smoked fish, local breeds, fish pickles, and a variety of dry fish were showcased at the event.
