Guwahati, August 03, 2023: The police on Thursday arrested Rakhi Sangma, a BJP mahila morcha member and an alleged key instigator of the July 24 violence in Tura, from a forest area near Nishangram in Assam’s Goalpara district.

Rakhi Sangma was among the mob that attacked the Chief Minister’s mini secretariat in Tura’s Dakopgre area, where a public meeting was held to discuss the inter-state boundary dispute with Assam.

The police said they received a tip-off that Rakhi Sangma was hiding in someone’s house in Nishangram, near Damra on the Assam-Meghalaya border, and launched a raid. She was found in a forest near a river, the police added.

Rakhi Sangma had fled with her husband to Nishangram after the violence and her name had emerged during the investigation.

The police have also recovered a series of social media chats between Rakhi Sangma and another accused, Jaynie Ningring Sangma, who allegedly gave instructions to the mob before and during the attack.

So far, 48 people, including Rakhi Sangma and other political activists, have been arrested in connection with the Tura violence.

Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma had earlier said that the government would wait for the police report before taking any further action on the matter.
