Guwahati, Nov 25: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday felicitated the newly elected BJP Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) following the party’s sweeping victory in the recently held by-elections in Assam. The National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led by the BJP, secured all five contested seats in the state.

Among the victorious candidates, Ghatowal secured the Behali Assembly seat for BJP, while Nirmal Kumar Brahma from the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) won the Sidli seat. Diptimayee Choudhury from Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) claimed the Bongaigaon seat, and BJP’s Diplu Ranjan Sarmah and Nihar Ranjan Das emerged victorious in Samaguri and Dholai, respectively.

The by-polls, which spanned 48 assembly constituencies and two Lok Sabha seats across 15 states, also saw important contests in Uttar Pradesh and Kerala’s Wayanad, where Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra made her electoral debut.

During the felicitation event, CM Sarma also laid out the BJP’s strategic focus for the upcoming 2026 Assam Assembly elections. He emphasized targeting constituencies with significant religious minority populations while stressing the party’s commitment to “justice for all, appeasement to none.”

“We will continue to reach out to minority areas, but our focus will remain on justice, not appeasement,” Sarma said. He outlined key constituencies, including North Karimganj, South Karimganj, Lahorighat, Rupahi, and Samaguri, as focal points for the BJP in the 2026 polls.

Reflecting on the BJP’s successes, particularly in Karimganj, where the party won despite a large minority presence, Sarma expressed confidence that these results would strengthen the BJP’s prospects in the upcoming elections. The 2026 Assam Assembly elections are scheduled for April.
