Puran Kumar Gurung, the Minister for Agriculture, Horticulture, Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services (AH&VS), and Fisheries, visited the Mushroom Unit in Mahjitar on December 24 to review the progress of mushroom cultivation in the region.
The Minister was accompanied by Ugen Lepcha, Chief Advisor to the Chief Minister, Suman Sharma, Principal Director of the Horticulture Department, BL Dahal, Mission Director of the Horticulture Department, and Tshering Chophel Bhutia, Additional Director of Agriculture & Horticulture for Pakyong, along with other senior officials.
During the visit, Gurung expressed his satisfaction with the advancements made at the unit and discussed strategies to further develop agricultural diversification, increase farmers’ income, and promote eco-friendly farming practices. He emphasized the government’s commitment to supporting mushroom cultivation as a crucial component of Sikkim’s agricultural growth. The delegation also interacted with local farmers and staff to explore ways to improve production and quality, aligning with the state’s goals of self-sufficiency and innovation in high-value crops.
