Agartala, Jan 3: Former Tripura Chief Minister and senior CPI(M) leader, Manik Sarkar, on Thursday accused the BJP of exploiting self-help groups (SHGs) to manipulate women voters for political purposes.
Speaking at a party program, Sarkar explained that SHGs were introduced in Tripura during the Left Front government to empower women economically. He pointed out that Tripura had been a leader in successfully implementing the SHG model, with official data showing a dramatic increase in women-led SHGs—from 4,000 in 2018 to 52,000 in 2024, engaging around 4.73 lakh women.
However, Sarkar alleged that the current BJP-led government had restricted SHG membership to women who are BJP members, deviating from the inclusive nature of the initiative. He accused the BJP of using the groups to sway women voters for electoral advantage.
Sarkar further urged the CPI(M) to increase its engagement with women voters, highlighting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recognition of their role in the BJP’s electoral victories. He emphasized the importance of giving a voice to women excluded from SHGs on political grounds.
In addition, the former Chief Minister criticized the BJP for turning religious programs into political events, alleging that such activities were now mainly organized by BJP supporters. Sarkar called on CPI(M) workers to participate in these programs to strengthen their connection with the public.
