Agartala, January 13, 2025: The Tripura government’s ambitious solar pump installation project under the PM-KUSUM scheme is revolutionizing agriculture in the state by improving irrigation systems and doubling farmers’ incomes. During an assembly session on Monday, Agriculture Minister Ratan Lal Nath outlined the project’s achievements and its far-reaching impact on small and marginal farmers.

Responding to an inquiry from Teliamura MLA and government chief whip Kalyani Roy, Nath emphasized that the initiative is setting a precedent across the country. “This project has been a game-changer for our farmers, ensuring sustainable irrigation while reducing dependency on electricity. It guarantees assured irrigation for at least 25 years,” he stated.

The project, with a target to install 10,895 solar pumps, has already achieved significant milestones. Nath revealed that 3,616 pumps have been installed across eight districts, irrigating 7,232 acres of land and benefiting an equal number of farmers.

The district-wise installations so far include 361 pumps in Dhalai, 334 in Unakoti, 290 in Gomati, 460 in South Tripura, 459 in Khowai, 715 in Sepahijala, 777 in West Tripura and 220 in North Tripura.

“Priority has been given to aspiration and ADC blocks, ensuring equitable benefits across regions,” Nath explained.

The minister also announced that 5,015 pumps are currently being installed, expected to irrigate an additional 10,030 acres of farmland and benefit over 5,000 farmers.

The ongoing installations by district include 545 pumps in Dhalai, 386 in Unakoti, 452 in Gomati, 359 in South Tripura, 438 in Khowai, 1,565 in Sepahijala, 908 in West Tripura and 362 in North Tripura.

Once the full target of 10,895 pumps is achieved, it will irrigate 21,790 acres of farmland, significantly enhancing agricultural productivity. The total cost of the project is estimated at ₹324 crore.

Nath highlighted the project’s cost-efficiency, with the government providing a maximum grant of ₹1.19 lakh for creating water sources. “Unlike other states, where farmers bear the cost of creating water sources, the Tripura government has taken this responsibility entirely,” he noted.

The solar pumps not only eliminate electricity costs but also allow farmers to grow multiple crops annually. “Farmers can now achieve double or even triple the income by producing two or three crops instead of one,” the minister said.

The initiative has placed Tripura as a leader in farmer-centric policies. “This project showcases our commitment to empowering farmers and creating a sustainable agricultural model. It’s a step towards fulfilling our vision of doubling farmers’ incomes,” Nath added.
