Agartala, January 21, 2025: An active karyakarta of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Anjan Debroy was arrested by the Tripura’s Kailasahar Women’s Police Station under Unakoti district in connection with the alleged rape of his housemaid.

According to the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kailasahar Women’s Police Station Ripita Bhattacharya, the accused is a resident of the PWD Road area under Kailasahar Municipal Council had been employing the complainant as a housemaid for a long time. The victim filed a written complaint alleging that Debroy had coerced her into non-consensual physical relations.

“Upon receiving the complaint, we immediately acted in accordance with the law and arrested the accused. A case has been registered against him under relevant sections, including Section 126(2), 64(2)(M), 74, 115(2), and 351(2) of the BNS,” said OC Bhattacharya.

The arrest, which took place late last night, led to a dramatic turn of events when a group of BJP leaders and party workers gathered outside the women’s police station. The crowd reportedly exerted pressure on the police to release Debroy, demanding leniency in the case. However, OC Bhattacharya and her team remained firm in their stand.

“The law does not discriminate based on political affiliation. The accused was arrested and produced before the court today as per legal procedures,” added Bhattacharya.

The accused Anjan Debroy was presented before the Kailasahar court on Tuesday afternoon, where the legal proceedings have begun.

The incident has created ripples in Kailasahar’s political circles, with opposition parties criticizing the ruling BJP for allegedly shielding their worker. Meanwhile, local residents have expressed concern over the rising incidents of crime against women and demanded strict action in this case.

Further investigation into the case is underway, and the authorities have assured a fair and unbiased probe.
