Internationally acclaimed theater director and playwright Padmashri Dr. Ratan Thiyam emphasized the need for a collaborative and integrated approach to preserving Manipur’s rich cultural heritage. Speaking at the award ceremony on the final day of the 21st Ningtham Khumhei Shumang Leela Festival at Iboyaima Shumang Leela Shanglen in Imphal on Friday, Ratan Thiyam highlighted the importance of cultural integration and tourism in sustaining and promoting the arts.

Receiving the prestigious Pidonu Award, presented by the Manipur State Shumang Leela Council, Ratan Thiyam acknowledged the government’s recent efforts in cultural development but stressed that artists require more than pensions to thrive. He advocated for the establishment of a world-class yet uniquely Manipur-oriented cultural complex to nurture the state’s artistic legacy.

Ratan Thiyam also underscored the significance of promoting cultural identity as a means of bridging divisions among communities in the state. “Unity can only be achieved through the essence of oneness in diverse cultural expressions,” he remarked.

He further pointed out that the government currently recognizes 35 art forms, suggesting that integrating these forms could significantly contribute to fostering unity and cultural pride.

The ceremony also honored individuals who have made significant sacrifices for the cause of Shumang Leela, celebrating their dedication to preserving this traditional art form.
