Kohima, Mar 6: The Congress has reaffirmed its commitment to bringing political change in Nagaland, with AICC secretary and state in-charge Saptagiri Sankar Ulaka stating that the party is determined to unseat the ruling Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) in the 2028 assembly elections.
Addressing a press conference on Wednesday, Ulaka emphasized the need for a new political direction in the state and discussed strategies with Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) leaders. He highlighted the party’s plans to strengthen its grassroots presence, conduct district-level tours, and identify potential candidates for the upcoming elections.
Ulaka pointed to the Congress’s resurgence in Nagaland following its victory in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, where S Supongmeren Jamir defeated NDPP’s Chumben Murry by a margin of 50,984 votes. He said the party’s success after two decades signaled growing public trust in its leadership.
Criticizing the NDPP-BJP coalition government, Ulaka alleged that corruption and misgovernance had hindered the state’s progress. He claimed that a 20 percent commission was being demanded for public services and raised concerns about unemployment, poor education infrastructure, and the rising cost of essential goods.
The Congress leader praised the governance of former chief minister SC Jamir and asserted that Nagaland deserves a transparent and development-driven administration. He expressed confidence that both the state and the Centre would witness a regime change in the 2028 and 2029 elections, respectively.
Over the next three months, the Congress plans to strengthen its organizational structure by forming key committees and mobilizing grassroots support.
NPCC president and lone Lok Sabha MP S Supongmeren Jamir backed Ulaka’s leadership, stating that his experience would be crucial in shaping the party’s future in Nagaland. He reaffirmed the Congress’s commitment to delivering corruption-free governance and addressing key issues affecting the state.
