Security forces in Manipur carried out multiple operations this week, resulting in the arrest of several active militants linked to different insurgent outfits across the state.
On Tuesday, four active cadres of the Kangleipak Communist Party (KCP) – Apunba City Meitei faction – were apprehended by security forces from Salungpham Mamang Leikai near Bazar under Heirok Police Station in Thoubal District. The arrested individuals have been identified as Md. Saruk Khan (34) and Sangomsumbam Akhter Ahamed (29), both residents of Thoubal Wangkhem Muslim; Kongjengbam Kumarjit Singh (41) of Nambol Leimapokpam Awang Leikai in Bishnupur District; and Laishram Joymangol Singh (47) of Kairembikhok Mamang Leikai, Thoubal District.
These individuals were reportedly involved in widespread extortion activities targeting brickfields, sawmills, banks, hospitals, educational institutions, oil pumps, shops, stone crushers, and contractors in Thoubal District.
Seized from their possession were one .32 pistol with a magazine and three live rounds, three high-explosive hand grenades, five mobile handsets, a four-wheeler, and two two-wheelers.
In a separate operation, Manipur Police arrested three active members of the SOREPA from Waithou Chiru in Imphal East District. The arrested militants have been identified as Leishungbam Lenin Singh (31), also known as Khuman; Yumkhaibam Lukhoi Singh (32), also known as Aboi; and Sagolsem Dinesh Singh (25). They were allegedly involved in extortion activities targeting schools in the Yairipok area.
In another incident, a KCP (Nongdrenkhomba) cadre, identified as Salam Sadananda Singh alias Igocha alias Pari (31), was arrested from a rented house at Kombirei Housing Complex under Lamphel Police Station in Imphal West District. He was reportedly engaged in extortion activities through threats and monetary demands directed at the general public in and around Imphal. Police recovered a mobile handset and an Aadhaar card from his possession.
Meanwhile, on Monday, central security forces apprehended three active cadres of the United National Liberation Front (UNLF-K) from the general area of Border Pillar 81 Sub Pillar 3 under Moreh Police Station in Tengnoupal District. The arrested individuals are Ningombam Shyam Singh (32), Chingangbam Johnson Meitei alias Angomcha Meitei (30), and Md. Sohel Khan (25).
Authorities continue to maintain heightened security in the region as part of ongoing efforts to curb insurgent activities.
