Agartala, April 22, 2025: In a significant operation against human trafficking, the Government Railway Police (GRP), in collaboration with the Border Security Force (BSF) and Tripura Police, arrested five suspected traffickers from three different locations in West Tripura district on Monday.

GRP Officer-in-Charge Tapas Das confirmed the arrests and said, “Acting on a credible tip-off, a joint raid was carried out in the early hours in Lankamura, Sharmalunga, and Sanmura areas. The operation was part of two ongoing investigations related to human trafficking.”

The accused, who had reportedly been evading arrest for a long time, were taken into custody following the successful raid. The arrested individuals have been identified as Sumon Das alias Bikash (39), Rahul Das (27), Bishwajit Das (49), Anibesh Sarkar (31), and Jewel Sarkar (26). All are residents of the areas where the raid was conducted.

“A special team is currently interrogating the suspects at Agartala GRP Police Station. We believe this is part of a larger trafficking network, and more arrests may follow as the probe progresses,” Das added. The five accused will be produced in court later today for remand.

The development comes just days after seven Bangladeshi nationals were apprehended at Agartala Railway Station for illegally entering Tripura in an attempt to travel beyond the state, indicating a worrying rise in cross-border human trafficking activity.
