Agartala, June 14, 2025: The Tripura unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday launched a state-wide protest near Integrated Check Posts (ICPs) and Land Customs Stations along the Bangladesh border, condemning the recent vandalism of Rabindranath Tagore’s ancestral home in the neighbouring country.
The protest saw large gatherings across all districts of Tripura, which shares an 856-kilometre international border with Bangladesh. BJP leaders and supporters assembled at key border points including the Akhaura ICP, voicing outrage over what they termed an “attack on shared cultural heritage.”
BJP State General Secretary and MLA Bhagaban Das, who led the demonstration in Agartala, sharply criticised the interim administration in Bangladesh for failing to prevent the incident.
“A heinous act has taken place in Bangladesh that has deeply hurt the sentiments of people in Tripura and the entire nation. The ancestral home of Kabiguru Rabindranath Tagore was vandalised by fascist and fundamentalist forces. This is an assault on our shared cultural legacy, Tagore is not just a literary icon but an emotional pillar for Bengalis across borders,” said Das.
Das alleged that Bangladesh’s current ruling establishment has allowed an environment of unrest to prevail, enabling such incidents to occur. “Even Kabiguru was not spared. These elements, like a pack of hyenas, have attacked what is sacred to us all,” he remarked.
Statewide demonstrations were staged near all border check posts and will continue on June 16 in every assembly constituency, according to the BJP.
“This protest is meant to deliver a clear message: those who committed this act are not only culturally bankrupt but mentally unstable,” Das added. “We urge all peace-loving citizens to unite and raise their voices so that such misdeeds are never repeated.”
The BJP also announced plans to continue highlighting the issue at various public forums, calling for strong international condemnation of the incident.
