The Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal, witnessed a second consecutive day of intense student protests as hundreds of students rallied across campus demanding the immediate removal of the Director, Dean, and Sub-Dean.
The agitation erupted after students accused the Director of using abusive and threatening language during an interaction, reportedly telling them to “dance naked,” “commit suicide,” or face being “hanged.” Students allege the remarks amounted to verbal abuse and psychological intimidation, sparking widespread outrage and condemnation across the institution.
Carrying placards and chanting slogans, the students voiced their anger and called for accountability. Slogans like “Why Director Want Us To Be Naked,” “We Accept Punishment, Not Harassment,” and “We Demand Removal of Director, Dean, and Sub-Dean” were prominently displayed. Several placards also raised concerns over the alleged mistreatment of female students, further intensifying the protest.
Protesters have also accused the Dean and Sub-Dean of enabling a culture of mental harassment on campus. With calls growing for a complete administrative overhaul, students are urging higher authorities to intervene and address what they describe as a toxic campus atmosphere.
In response, the RIMS administration issued a statement through its Media Cell on Wednesday, defending the disciplinary actions it recently took. According to the press release, action was taken after students defied warnings and skipped classes to attend a picnic on April 30, a working day.
The administration said it had received verbal complaints from faculty on April 29 about the students’ plans. Despite being cautioned, several students, including members of the RIMS Students’ Union, went ahead with the outing. As a result, some students were suspended from classes for up to 15 days, fined, and asked to stay home until their suspension period ended.
As the standoff continues, the situation at RIMS remains tense, with students refusing to back down until their demands are met. All eyes are now on the authorities to see how they will resolve the escalating crisis.
